Synopsis by Clarke Fountain

In the middle of the Ming Dynasty period of Chinese history, "Susan" (an English-language name given at the time of English dubbing) is a girl who has been trained from a very early age to serve as a concubine and high-class prostitute (played by Shaw Yin Yin). When she is old enough to have her own romantic feelings, her affection goes out to a young scholar. The boy doesn't know how to manage his funds, and nearly suffers lasting harm, but for Susan's intervention. Later, Susan becomes the unwilling concubine of the Emperor, and becomes embroiled in the conspiracies surrounding him. By that time, though, her beloved scholar is in a position to reward her kindness to him.
