Synopsis by Leslie Birdwell
Program three in the series The Story of English demonstrates the far-reaching effects of the English of Shakespeare and the King James Bible. This is also the time that English began to be imported to America during the initial colonization. The video includes scenes from Shakespeare's plays as performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company. English villages in the Costwold Upland, East Anglia, and Suffolk are visited along with the Chesapeake Bay in America where experts theorize that English sounds much as it did over 300 years ago. The modern New England accent is examined and actors at the Plimoth Plantation Historical Museum work on getting their accents right. Robert McNeil hosts.
