Evidently set during the Franco-Prussian war, The Standard Bearer concentrates on the color sergeant of a courageous French regiment. After bidding his family a tearful goodbye, the sergeant joins his comrades on the battlefield. Wounded in action, our hero manages to hide the French flag entrusted in his care, lest he be captured and executed by the enemy. Arriving at a field hospital, the dying sergeant requests a final visit from his family. After his death, the sergeant's valiant wife braves shot and shell to return the flag to the regiment.
