James Cagney reportedly never took his tough-guy image all that serious and he visibly has a ball poking a bit of fun of the gangster genre in St. Louis Kid. Not only does he butt heads with the Bad Guys -- which is a sight in itself -- but he allows himself to be slapped repeatedly by a dame. The lady in question, Patricia Ellis, may not possess the earthiness of, say, a Mae Clarke, but the scene remains a highlight in an otherwise pretty routine gangster yarn.
