The undeveloped terrain of Fishkill, New York and Westfield, New Jersey stood in for the "Wild West" in the Biograph one-reeler Song of the Wildwood Flute. Her trademarked curls hidden under a black wig, Mary Pickford stars as a wide-eyed Indian maiden. Two braves vie for the heroine's affections, leading to a bloody duel a mort. The final scenes are dominated by an Indian medicine man, whose grotesque make-up was greeted with derision by the filmgoers of the period, despite the overall excellence of D. W. Griffith's direction. Appearing in the film, and serving as technical advisor, was prolific Native American actor Chief Dark Cloud.
