Synopsis by Hal Erickson
The three-part documentary series The Ship set out to re-create the 1771 sea voyage of explorer James Cook. Using an exact replica of Cook's vessel the Endeavour, 40 volunteers cast off from the coast of Australia for a 43-day trip to Bali in the Java Sea (the original destination, Jakarta, was abandoned due to political riots in that city). The latter-day explorers were required to undergo the same conditions endured by Cook and his crew, including eating the same sort of food "enjoyed" during the original voyage. The principal difference between the 18th and 21st century expeditions was that the latter included women as well as men on deck. The three episodes covered days 11 through 16, 16 through 19, and 20 through 43 of the voyage. The Ship made its American cable-TV bow on October 14, 2002.
