Synopsis
Conclusion. Echinoderms such as sea urchins, starfish and sea cucumbers may not have brains (and they eat sand) but they're "The Ultimate Animal." This hour uses stop-motion photography to follow echinoderms, which have been around for 500 million years, as they interact with each other (i.e., engage in a turf war) and seek out food more elusive than sand. They can be fierce predators (one is seen devouring a mussel), but they have few natural enemies. One reason, says narrator Peter Coyote: "They taste bad."
