Synopsis by Alice Duncan

The Sensational 70's documentary series offers viewers a look at "the best and worst" moments of the decade -- presenting excerpts from film and television to review the politics, significant events, developments in science and technology, sports, and entertainment of the time. Memorable topics from 1974 that are covered in this program include: Richard Nixon's resignation from the presidency; Gerald Ford's offer of amnesty to Vietnam-era draft dodgers; Palestine Liberation Organization chairman Yasir Arafat's address to the United Nations General Assembly; the end of OPEC's oil embargo; economic boom in Arab states; the beginning of construction on the trans-Alaska oil pipeline; India's successful test of an atomic device -- making it the world's sixth nation to have "the bomb"; Fidel Castro and Cuba are given media attention; devotees send their children to live at the Hare Krishna School in Texas; gay rights demonstrations take place in New York City; public protests lead to less stringent marijuana laws in California; legendary dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov defects from the Soviet Union and joins the American Ballet Theatre; Hank Aaron hits his 715th home run, breaking the record set by Babe Ruth in the 1930s; and the deaths of composer, bandleader, and pianist Duke Ellington and famous aviator Charles Lindbergh.
