Synopsis by Mark Deming
Before the Who released Tommy, British R&B mavens turned psychedelic pioneers the Pretty Things released what many cite as the first "rock opera," 1968's S.F. Sorrow, and this documentary documents a special performance of the entire album at London's famed Abbey Road Studios from 1998, featuring the same lineup of the band that recorded the LP twenty years before. The Pretty Things: S.F. Sorrow at Abbey Road also includes guest performances from Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour and narration from Arthur Brown. Songs include "S.F. Sorrow Is Born," "Loneliest Person," "Balloon Burning," "The Journey," "Well of Destiny," and more.
