Review by Michael Costello

Peter Hyams' film about a murder investigation at a military garrison is a routine cop movie. Sean Connery and Mark Harmon star as, respectively, the provost marshal of a military base and a police detective who are forced to work together when a female MP is found dead on the San Francisco base. This isn't really a bad film, but one that, like many of Hyams' films, just seems to be going through the motions. As the pair conduct their less than strenuous investigation, most audiences will be able to figure out the murderer's identity long before the two cops. There's supposed to be bad blood between Connery and Harmon from a past encounter, but while Connery gives their scenes some edge, Harmon's performance is so pallid that he barely seems to register. An actor apparently too genial to play anger convincingly, he fares somewhat better in the perfunctory romantic scenes with a lively young Meg Ryan. Jack Warden also does a nice turn as Connery's buddy. The photography of Hyams, who shot the film himself, may be ordinary, but San Francisco is always a beautiful location.
