The opening of chapter nine of Columbia's The Phantom reveals that our hero (Tom Tyler) saved himself from the avalanche by hiding in a (hitherto unseen) cave. But after reuniting with Diana Palmer (Jeanne Bates), The Phantom finds Larkin (John Maxwell) killed by an Atari poisoned dart and the Davidson expedition captured by The Fire Princess, actually a local chorus girl hired by Dr. Bremmer (Francis MacDonald) to impersonate an Atari legend. This cheap-looking temptress dares The Phantom to go "through these flames and come out un-scorched the same as I did." The Phantom accepts the dare but is soon engulfed in the blaze.
