This comedy-drama period film is a retelling of Charles Dickens’ 1850 novel called David Copperfield, set during the Victorian era. This adaptation focuses on the life of David (Dev Patel) as he experiences being beaten by his stepfather, Mr. Murdstone (Darren Boyd), and being sent to work in his factory. When David learns of his mother’s death, he escapes his dreary life at the factory and lodges with his affluent aunt (Tilda Swinton), where he encounters new misadventures with eccentric characters.
