Synopsis

Conclusion: "Triumph" recalls the war in the Pacific, from Tarawa in 1943 to Times Square on V-J Day. Allied advances were steady but hardly without cost, as seen in haunting color footage of American bodies floating in the surf off Tarawa. Back in the States, many---but not all--answered Bing Crosby's crooning call to "Buy, buy, buy, buy a bond," and the productivity that resulted meant that the GIs were four times better equipped than their enemies. Still, it took 12,000 American lives to take Okinawa (there were 170,000 Japanese dead). And before some could celebrate in Times Square, 55 million others had to die elsewhere. Martin Sheen narrates.
