Review by Michael Hastings

Jackie Chan's checkered English-language career takes another hit with this odd, discomfiting project, a multi-national production that seems designed to appeal to every film market in the world -- without really satisfying any audience in particular. Distressingly similar to his 2002 feature -- DreamWorks' square yet crude The Tuxedo -- The Medallion saddles the star with another power-granting object coveted by a mincing European bad guy (here played by a worse-for-wear Julian Sands) and a somnambulant, Western, brunette love interest (a damp, humorless Claire Forlani). The addition of a sage child (Alexander Bao) may indicate that the film is perhaps not intended for anyone of driving age, but even children deserve better than The Medallion's mirthless, CGI-ed stunts and lame gay-joke patter. The climactic, incomprehensible, cave-set showdown only underlines The Medallion's uneasy mélange of Goonies-era whimsy, maudlin Ghost-like quasi-romance, and video-game hyperactivity.
