This Raffles wannabe was directed and written by its star, Harry Carey. In keeping with his "good bad man" image, Carey plays Gentleman Joe, a safecracker with a heart of gold. In his efforts to rescue an innocent youth (Rexford Burnett) from execution, Gentleman Joe endangers his own freedom and safety. This wins Joe the undying gratitude of the boy's pretty sister Fern Foster. In view of the leading character's vocation, it is amusing that one of the supporting actors in The Master Cracksman is named E. A. Lock.
