Synopsis by Mark Deming

A kid who loves magic gets more than he bargained for when he tries out a new trick in this family-friendly comedy. Ben (Thor Braun) is an eight-year-old boy being raised by his overworked mom Laura (Chantal Janzen) and unemployed dad Koos (Theo Maassen). One evening, Laura and Koos take the kids out to see a performance by Hans Smid (Daan Schuurmans), a talented magician, and Ben is fascinated by what he sees. Ben wants to learn to be a magician, and while Laura is wary, Koos is as excited as Ben to learn the secrets behind the illusions he's seen. Ben and Koos begin studying with local magician Burlage (Fred Goessens), and while the father is more than a little clumsy, his son shows a keen natural talent and seems to have what it takes to become a professional. Ben is also able to persuade his classmate Sylvie (Java Siegertsz) to join the act as his assistant, but when Ben and Koos try to work up a spectacular "Disappearing Woman" routine, they hit an unexpected snag -- they make Sylvie vanish, but can't seem to bring her back. Het Geheim (aka The Secret) was an official selection at the 2011 Kristiansand International Children's Film Festival.
