Review by Craig Butler

Although perhaps considered daring by some when it was originally released in 1967, it's doubtful that many people even then found The Love-Ins to be very credible. Nothing more than an exploitation flick, Love-Ins is every bit as clichéd and melodramatic as one might expect -- and while that doesn't make for a good movie, it does make for a good viewing experience, provided one is in the right frame of mind. For those approaching it for laughs and laughs only, Love-Ins is a rewarding hoot, from its Establishment view of hippies to its seriously ego-tripping "cult" head to its throwback-to-1940s-Hollywood "losing the baby" punishment for the female lead. There also are some fabulous period fashions to view, and more supposedly "hip" and "with it" dialogue than you can shake a stick at. Given the screenplay, no actor is expected to emerge unscathed, and so it is high praise to say that James MacArthur and Susan Oliver at least manage to find some interesting moments for their characters and do play their clichéd roles with professionalism. Arthur Dreifuss' direction does keep things moving, and he bat least indulges the screenplay's high melodrama; again, this doesn't make for a good movie, but it keeps things entertaining.
