Synopsis by Hal Erickson
You'll seldom find a more all-encompassing title than The Loser, The Hero. This Taiwanese film concentrates in its early reels on a young Taipei student who hasn't done so well on a college entrance exam. Shipped off to a special school that specializes in cramming a maximum amount of knowledge into its students in a minimum amount of time, the boy is tormented by the disciplinarian head teacher. The adult villain is foiled by one rebellious student, who drops out of school, thereby depriving the teacher of a goodly chunk of subsidy money. Thus, by "losing", the dropout "wins."
