Synopsis by Janiss Garza

After their success with the action-packed serial, The Exploits of Elaine, brothers Leopold Wharton and Theodore Wharton decided to try a comedy serial and made the highly successful, 14-episode New Adventures of J. Rufus Wallingford, based on the cartoon character created by George Randolph Chester for Cosmopolitan magazine. This is episode five, featuring Burr McIntosh as the title character and Max Figman as Blackie Daw. Violet Warden (Lolita Robertson, Figman's real-life wife) has been swindled by Andre Perigourd (Allan Murnane), who sold her a cheap, illegal imitation of a designer gown. Wallingford and Daw resolve to out-con the con. Their first bit of luck happens when a burglar (a young Oliver Hardy) breaks into their home -- the crook happens to have Perigourd's calling card. Wallingford and Daw go to Perigourd's establishment and trick him out of a hundred thousand dollars. When Perigourd realizes he's been conned, he threatens to go to the police -- until Wallingford points out that they'll just reveal that Perigourd is in the business of making illegal knock-offs.
