Synopsis by Janiss Garza

The Civil War breaks up the friendship between Southerners Harry Apperson (Joe King), who sides with the North, and Jack Batesford (Joe Bennett), who believes in the Confederacy. They are both in love with Cora (Belle Bennett), also a staunch Confederate. She chooses Jack over Harry, who goes to the West to make his fortune. Fifty years pass and the only remaining Appersons are Harry and his grandson, Jim (also played by King). The old man wants to be buried back home, so he sends Jim to buy the old Apperson house. The Batesfords haven't fared so well and Cora's granddaughter (also played by Bennett) is about to lose the family place to Pensinger Gale (Jack Curtis), who has the mortgage. She refuses Gale's offer to erase the debt if he marries her, and she also refuses the freely offered help of Jim. Instead she goes to Columbia with her faithful mammy (Lucretia Harris) and tries to find work. When she's unable to make her way in the city, she decides to commit suicide. But before she can throw herself off the docks, she is attacked by a gang and rescued by Jim. He gets her home back for her, and she marries him.
