Synopsis by Mark Deming

Two different families have their lives turned upside down by tragic circumstances with an ironic commonality in this documentary from filmmaker Diego García Moreno. A Colombian soldier has a brush with death when he's struck by shrapnel from a land mine that pierces his heart. A gifted cardiac surgeon is able to save the soldier's life, and he's tremendously grateful to have a new lease on life, but he also finds himself facing a world of new challenges -- his career in the military has been brought to an abrupt close, and now he must find a new way to support his wife and son. Meanwhile, the surgeon who saved the soldier's life finds himself confronted with the sort of emotions his patients deal with every day with he learns his wife has been diagnosed with life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia. A success at film festivals in Latin America, El Corazon (aka The Heart) was an official selection at the 2008 London International Documentary Festival.
