The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century: Slaughter is volume four in the eight-part educational and historical documentary series from PBS. This 60-minute episode examines how and why soldiers are able to fight despite defeat, suffering, and the loss of human life. Program highlights include autobiographical accounts from combatants at the battles of Somme, Verdun, and Passchendaele, as well as footage from The Battle of Somme, the first-ever war documentary.
