Jim Podhoretz directs this profile of former Colorado Buffaloes football head coach Bill McCartney, a religious man who experienced terrific highs and devastating personal tragedies. McCartney, who went on to found the Christian men's ministry known as Promise Keepers, took the Buffaloes program to heights that the school had never seen before, and has not seen since, winning a national title and participating in consecutive Orange Bowls. His off-the-field life, however, was more complicated, as he saw his players find legal troubles, and his star quarterback, the father of one of McCartney's grandchildren, fall victim to cancer at age 21.
