After their son dies in a New York City mugging, the Pradhans, B. V. and Parvati, must rent out his room to make ends meet. A budding actress, Sujata, and her boyfriend, Vilas, take the rooms which begins the Pradhan's cycle of dealing with their son's death. When a soothsayer tells Parvati her son will be reincarnated, she takes hope. B.V. however suffers much more -- to the point of attempting to commit suicide. In the midst of the confusion surrounding the suicide attempt the Pradhans overhear Sujata and Vilas arguing about an abortion. Parvati decides that their baby is her son reincarnated and their fates are thrown together as they must face down Vilas's uncouth father.
