With The Gallant Fool, director Robert North Bradbury and screenwriter Harry L. Fraser obviously attempted to broaden Bob Steele's appeal, which hitherto mostly played to fans of low budget westerns. Unfortunately, a lack of budget and some really bad performances hamper the good intentions and if that wasn't enough, the "western" is overly padded with tedious circus acts. Fraser apparently knew a dud when he saw one and his screenwriting credit was instead awarded to the highly fictitious "Harry O. Jones."
