Synopsis by Rose of Sharon Winter

This video is one volume in a ten-part series on the extraordinary decade of the 1960's in America. Peter Jennings hosts the production, which uses film clips, personal recollections, and expert commentary to give a picture of the times. 1964 saw the election of Lyndon Johnson as President. The powerful politician used his influence to get the Civil Rights Act passed. But resistance to the end of segregation was still afoot, as civil rights workers were murdered in Mississippi. Nikita Krushchev lost his party's support in the U.S.S R. and the war in Vietnam heated up with the passage of the Gulf of Tonkin resolution. The United States celebrated its bright side with the 1964 New York World's Fair, and the Beatles came to America.
