This film is one in a series on English painters, which tells the painters' stories with their works, recollections, and commentary by art historians. In this volume, the great water colorist and oil painter J.M.W. Turner is featured. Born in 1775, Turner became the foremost English painter of the romantic movement. He painted in a unique style that has been described as "tinted steam." Such was the feeling of color and light in his landscapes. His works, which grew more abstract over the years, were very influential on the French Impressionists. The essayist John Ruskin was an admirer of Turner's work, and wrote glowing literary reviews of the painter's seascapes. Turner left to Britain over 19,000 watercolors, drawings, and oils.
