Hisham Mayet helmed this colorful essayistic documentary that explores the music and ceremonial pageantry surrounding the Niger River in the geographic region known as the Sahel - or roughly, the area that includes the countries of Mali and Niger. Mayet captures such indigenous phenomena as Sahel night markets, Zarma possession ceremonies, Dogon dance rituals and much more, and weaves it all into a stunning, sweeping tapestry.
