Stan Laurel reportedly believed The Dancing Masters to be, if not the team's worst film, then certainly the nadir of their years with Fox. Well, for once Stan has been proven wrong. Although no comedy masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, this haphazardly put together farce benefits from having very little in the way of plot -- and who needs too much plot in a Laurel and Hardy comedy? -- and inoffensive juvenile leads. Pretty Trudy Marshall's presence actually benefits one scene -- one of those domino effect routines -- and Allan Lane, of B-Western fame, makes a smooth villain. Several co-workers from the days at Hal Roach are also on hand, including diminutive Daphne Pollard and Charley Hall, and The Dancing Masters comes perhaps closest to the Roach-style of freewheeling comedy than any of the team's later vehicles.
