Synopsis by Mark Deming

In this taut and entertaining thriller, Detective 507 (Kikunosuke Onoe) is the leader of Detective Office Five, an elite branch of the Japanese police force that can deal with a wide variety of emergencies at a moment's notice. 507 and his crew are given an unusual assignment when they're sent to Shanghai to recover a vault full of treasure stashed there by Japanese soldiers during World War II. The riches have been stored in an ingeniously designed vault, and the code needed to crack the lock has been hidden in an unusual place -- a tattoo on the body of Meilan (Izumi Inamori), a beautiful nightclub performer. Somehow word gets out that Meilan is the key to finding the long-lost treasure, and 507 has to protect her from a steady stream of opportunists and former soldiers eager to get their hands on both her and the loot. Ango (aka The Code) was the first theatrical feature in eleven years from director Kaizo Hayashi after a detour into producing projects for television.
