Synopsis by Sean Hurley
The Century: Events That Shaped the World is a 12-part ABC News production hosted by Peter Jennings that explores the many events and personalities that colored the 20th century. When a young singer named Elvis Presley began performing, the world would be forever changed. In Memphis Dreams: Innocence and Rebellion, Jennings hosts the re-creation of this era that would serve as the model for the late 20th century culture of idol worship. Combining the rhythm and blues of the Mississippi delta with rockabilly tempos, Elvis was able to incite hysteria in American youths as well as the scorn of the nation's adults. This program documents the early years of Elvis' rise to fame.
