Synopsis by Mark Deming

A woman finds herself questioning her husband's sanity in this psychological thriller from Argentina. Luis (Luis Luque) is an academic with a reputation among his friends for a sharp tongue and a competitive nature. Luis's attitude pushes him too far when, during an argument with a colleague he believes has been plagiarizing his research, Luis brutally attacks the man and winds up in a mental hospital. When his wife Beatriz (Beatriz Spelzini) welcomes him home months later, his doctors insist his recovery is complete, but she senses something is very wrong. While Luis cleans fish and rearranges his library with an uncommon aggression, and he's more than a bit upset when his cat fails to recognize him after he returns home, otherwise he seems curiously passive. As Luis exhibits increasingly uncharacteristic behavior, Beatriz has severe doubts about his stability, and the tension and uncertainty causes her own psyche to slowly unravel. Written and directed by Carlos Sorin, El Gato Desaparece (aka The Cat Vanishes) received its North American premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.
