Synopsis by Mark Deming

A man trying to live down a fatal mistake is reunited with a daughter he's never known in this drama from Chinese filmmaker Zhuo Gehe. Yela is a martial arts instructor who is well versed in the art of self-defense, but at heart he is a peaceful soul despite his sometimes threatening appearance. When Yela learns that his wife has been having an affair, he goes on a drunken bender and confronts the man who seduced his spouse. The argument turns violent, and Yela accidentally kills the man. Yela is found guilty of murder, and while he's behind bars his wife gives birth to a daughter; rather than raise the girl herself, she leaves the child with Yela's mother. After twelve years in custody, Yela is paroled so he can look after Tuola, the daughter he's never met. However, Yela learns that Tuola has been raised to believe her father died before she was born, and rather than frighten her, Yela presents himself to her as her uncle. Tuola wants to meet her mother, and with Yela's help they set out to find her, with the two getting to know one another on the road. Starring Ba Te'er and Talin Tuoya, The Blue Xanadu received its North American premiere at the 2008 Montreal World Film Festival.
