Synopsis by Mark Deming

In 1964, Beatlemania was sweeping the globe and Australia was hardly immune to this contagion, so when the Fab Four headed to Australia and New Zealand for a concert tour in June of that year, the Aussie news media was on hand to record the proceedings. The Beatles: Down Under features interviews with John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, as well as Jimmy Nichol, the drummer who sat in for an ailing Ringo for the first leg of the tour. The film also looks at the fans who attended the shows, and the Australian beat music scene of the day. For copyright reasons, no music or performances from the Beatles are included.
