Synopsis by Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.
The first episode of The Awful Truth will remind viewers of the tumult surrounding President Clinton during his final years in office. Host Michael Moore, accompanied by a costumed group resembling the Salem citizens of witch-trial fame, lampoon the impeachment process by traveling to Ken Starr's home and then Washington, D.C., Moore explains to Starr and several members of Congress that there is a cheaper way to conduct a witch trial. The colonial-clad inquisitors faint before Newt Gingrich's office and read from "the book of Starr" (aka the Starr Report). During the second half of the program, Moore introduces Chris Donahue, a man dying because his insurance company refuses to pay for a pancreas transplant. Moore visits the company with invitations to Chris' funeral. Later, a funeral rehearsal, complete with minister, casket, and pallbearers, is held outside the insurance company's office. A week after the filming, the company agreed to pay for the transplant.
