Review by Jonathan Crow

Helen Lee's opus tries desperately to make a romantic comedy that is both romantic and a comedy and falls well short of the mark on both counts. With a good actress, the character of Alessa -- who poses as an Asian heiress -- could have been engaging and fun, in spite of the film's ludicrous premise and hackneyed dialogue. Instead, lead actress Sook-Yin Lee, a popular VJ for the Canadian cable channel MuchMusic, offers little but mugging at the camera, resulting in a movie that's less fun and less accomplished than a third grade theater production. Don McKellar, who has the thankless role of shunned suitor, spends much of the film looking like he wants to kill his agent. Flat, uninspired, and uninteresting, Art of Woo offers little woo and almost no art.
