Roald Amundsen, the Norwegian explorer who won the race to the South Pole in December 1911, is profiled in Ten Who Dared: Roald Amundsen. Knowing from an early age what his career would be, Amundsen had his sights on the discovery of the North Pole. However, he was beaten to that goal by Robert Pearcy in 1909, so he decided to focus on the South Pole instead. Through meticulous planning and great attention to details, he was well supplied for the arduous trip. Amundsen and his men overcame the many hazards of the trip and beat Robert Scott to the Pole by 34 days.
