The man who became famous for asking "Dr. Livingston, I presume?" came to America to escape an impoverished life in Wales. He managed to fight on both sides in the Civil War, and afterward, became a journalist for the New York Herald. The newspaper sent him to Africa to look for the explorer David Livingstone, who had not contacted anyone in over three years. Stanley could not convince Livingstone to return home, and when the explorer died, Stanley decided to continue his unfinished work to determine the source of the Nile River.
