The tragic south-to-north expedition across Australia by Robert O'Hara Burke, a policeman, and William John Willis, a surveyor, is recounted in Ten Who Dared: Burke & Willis. The two were sent by the government to map the unknown land in central Australia, where it was uncertain what land features might exist. They were well-equipped with food, supplies, and animals, but due to the hostile weather conditions, inexperienced leadership, internal conflicts, and bad decisions, the men died of weakness and starvation before they could reach home.
