Review by Michael Costello

A buddy cop movie that has chosen to bring the genre's gay subtext to the surface, Tango and Cash quickly wears out its welcome. Competitors Ray Tango (Sylvester Stallone), a slick L.A. narcotics cop, and Gabe Cash (Kurt Russell), a grungy L.A. cop, are teamed up to bring down drug lord Yves Perret (Jack Palance). Given the proliferation of penis jokes in the movie, perhaps "Size Matters" might have worked better as a title. Although the two characters end up in a maximum security prison after being framed for murder, trading childish wisecracks seems to be their main interest. No one expects too much reality from a film like this, but the plot is so unrelentingly silly, and the dialogue so inane, that, like the two stars, one is soon planning an escape. On a more positive note, director Andrei Konchalavsky once again proves he has a way with action scenes.
