Synopsis by Hal Erickson
The British game show Take the Plunge was evidently inspired by the American TV quizzer Blackout and the similar Spanish endeavor Sin Verguenza. On each episode, the contestants were allowed to view film clips, in which people discoursed at length about something or other. It was then up to the players to figure out the subject upon which the person on film had been expounding. Meanwhile, the players on the opposite team were allowed to "mess" with the competition's train of thought by using a block-out button (or "plunger") to obscure the film or words spoken, or by loudly ad-libbing at strategic moments. To keep things reasonably fair, this sort of hectoring was only permitted for five seconds. Hosted by Sue Pollard, Take the Plunge showed up on Britain's ITV circa 1994.
