This romantic drama reclothes Goethe's The Elective Affinities in modern guise. In the story, Eduard (Rudolf Thome) and his wife Charlotte (Angelika Kettelbach), who are happily married, decide to move out of their tiny apartment into a space in an abandoned factory building, which they can fix up to their liking. Eduard invites an old school friend to visit and help with the work and, nothing daunted, Charlotte invites her newly made friend Ottilie. Before long, the couples have been reshuffled.
