The history and techniques of filmed special effects is the focus of this sweeping, highly technical documentary, entitled Synthetic Film, or How the King Kong Monster Was Testified to by Fantasy and Precision. The director, Helmut Herbst, teaches film at the Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek Berlin, and has included examples of special effects work and animation by over 90 filmmakers. Of particular interest is his review of the techniques used by early filmmakers of the 1920s.
