Synopsis by Steve Blackburn
"Sword and Sandal" movies experienced their zenith of popularity in the 1950s and 1960s. The loosely defined genre includes films (often foreign-made) set in ancient Rome, ancient Greece, or tales involving Greek or Roman myths. This video provides a collection of trailers for such movies, including Jason and the Argonauts, a 1963 British film directed by Don Chaffey starring stop-motion wizardry by special effects titan Ray Harryhausen, along with Todd Armstrong as Jason and Honor Blackman as the goddess Hera. Blackman was television's original The Avengers heroine (1962-1964), and also starred as Pussy Galore in the James Bond movie Goldfinger (1964). Among the many other movies previewed in this program are Atlas (1961), filmed in Greece by low-budget maestro Roger Corman; Goliath and the Vampires (1961, Italian); The Giant of Metropolis (1961, Italian); The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1974, British); and others.
