Synopsis by Mark Deming

A woman who is young at heart realizes her age may be catching up with her in this drama set in Northern Brazil. Bastu (Maria Sebastiana Martins Alvaro) is over eighty years old, but she's still full of the joy of living and enjoying dancing with her friends in the evenings. However, her husband Feliciano isn't as adventurous, preferring quiet nights at home, and early one morning she returns to her house to discover her spouse is dead. Bastu's grandchildren take turns looking after her as she grieves for her husband, but it becomes evident she and the kids feel Bastu needs to adjust to taking care of herself. Bastu begins hearing strange noises late at night, and she's convinced her late husband's spirit has returned to make trouble for her; hoping to appease him, she backs up his belongings and sets out on a trip to return his earthly possessions to the sea. Girimunho (aka Swirl) was directed by Helvecio Marins Jr. and Clarissa Campolina; it was the duo's first feature film.
