Synopsis by Mark Deming

The perils of young love and documentary filmmaking are the two focal points of this comedy from Iran. A film crew is supposed to be unobtrusively capturing the goings-on in a typical household, until the teenage son decides to directly address the camera with his dilemma. As a child, he was offered the hand of the neighbor girl in marriage. To his pleasant surprise, she's grown up to be a lovely and charming young woman, and he welcomes the prospect of a walk down the aisle. However, his family no longer feels the same way, and they begin going to absurd lengths to keep the young lovers apart. Masaebeh Shirin (aka Sweet Agony) was a popular and prize-wining entry in Iran's 1999 Fajr Film Festival.
