Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka
The darts thrown at the morally inept upper classes in this drama from Latvian director Ianas Streitch are a little blunted, and the halos of the underprivileged just slightly tarnished. Seventeen-year-old Marite (Zane Ianchevska) is a rustic innocent who takes a job working for a formerly wealthy farming family, still doing fairly well. The father of the family is an arrogant yet doddering old man, his son is a simpleton, his daughter is haughty, and his young wife is having an affair with a farmhand, Antanas (Alguirdas Paulavitchus). The entire lot is one large pain to the timid Marite who finds their behavior hard to bear. The household relationships soon come to a head when Antanas -- who aims to be the next patriarch here -- gets the daughter pregnant and assumes he will simply marry her and take over.
