Sixteen contestants are deposited on one of the 100 islands off the coast of Panama as Survivor: Pearl Islands gets under way. Inasmuch as this island chain was once known for its heavy pirate activity, the players are divvied up into the "Drake" and "Morgan" tribes (both named after celebrated buccaneers). In the 90-minute opening episode, it is the Morgan group that holds the first tribal council -- and, three days into the competition, the tribe votes the first player off the island -- or in this case, the loser "walks the plank."
