Synopsis by Clarke Fountain
Kirthi is an aristocrat living in Sri Lanka with his barren but suitably haughty wife Sama. He has decided that his position in the community requires that he father a child, but this obviously cannot come from his wife. He advertises for someone willing to be paid to bear a child by him, and a beautiful married peasant named Soma comes forward. With the full knowledge of both spouses, the two start making a baby the old-fashioned way, and keep at it even when Soma has become pregnant. Meanwhile, Soma's husband has used up all her earnings for the surrogate pregnancy by staying continually drunk.
