Synopsis by Brian Whitener

Based on Margit Soderholm's critically acclaimed novel, Sunshine Follows Rain was itself a widely popular film and set the tone for post-WWII Swedish cinema. The film is a simple rural melodrama where Marit, the daughter of a small farmer, falls in love with a traveling gypsy, Jon. Forced by her father to marry another man, Marit and Jon run away on the eve of her wedding. Together they spend a beautiful summer living in the woods, but winter comes and they are forced to return to the village to seek shelter. Alls well that ends well however, as Marit's father forgives her and accepts her love for Jon. Filled with poignant references to Sweden's cultural tradition and Nordic symbolism, Sunshine Follows Rain appealed to mythic notions of Sweden's rural past without glorifying them.
